This is an unofficial fan project. It is not my original work.

Maze: Solve the World's Most Challenging Puzzle was written and illustrated by Christopher Manson and first published in 1985. Every room, every drawing, every word of the story and the puzzle itself are his. I did not create them, and I am not affiliated with Christopher Manson, his publishers, or anyone who holds rights to the book.

What I did: put the book into a form you can play in a browser, and made an optional "enhanced" look for the rooms. That's all. If you enjoy this, the credit belongs to Christopher Manson - please seek out the book.

About the game

Forty-five illustrated rooms, each with its own short story and a handful of numbered doors. A guide leads you through the House - but he is not necessarily on your side.

The three questions

  1. Which sixteen rooms make up the shortest path from room 1 to room 45 and back to room 1?
  2. What is the riddle hidden in room 45?
  3. What is the answer to the riddle?

Features

  • All 45 rooms plus the entrance, with the full room stories
  • Narration for every room
  • Three graphics modes, switchable any time from the ⚙ menu:
    • Original linework - Christopher Manson's pen-and-ink illustrations from the book
    • Original coloured - the coloured plates from the 1994 CD-ROM adaptation
    • Enhanced - a fan reinterpretation (see below)
  • Back button and a trail of every room you've visited, with one-click rewind
  • The game remembers your run - close the tab and continue later
  • Plays on PC, tablet and phone

Controls

Click or tap a door to go through it · Back / Backspace to step back · Space pauses the narration · ⚙ for graphics, volume and fullscreen

Credits - who made what

  • Book, illustrations, text and puzzle: Christopher Manson - Maze: Solve the World's Most Challenging Puzzle (1985). All original artwork shown in "Original linework" mode is his.
  • Narration and coloured plates: from The Riddle of the Maze (1994 CD-ROM), developed by Fathom Pictures and published by Interplay.
  • Music: "Arrival" by Aylex (freetouse.com).
  • Browser edition (code, layout): Dimanology.
  • "Enhanced" images: made by Dimanology using AI image generation (Nano Banana Pro), with Christopher Manson's illustrations and the 1994 plates as direct references. They are derivative fan art of his work, not original designs, and they are not endorsed by him. Where an enhanced image differs from the book, the book is right - switch to "Original linework" to see the real thing.
